The small, idyllic and hospitable Verwöhnhotel Sonnhof I Vitus Winkler is run by Eva-Maria and Vitus Winkler. Grandmother Fanny started the hotel on the sunny Salzburg plateau in 1928, where it swiftly gained in popularity.

Sonnhof lies in the middle of the Pongau district, 60 km south of Salzburg, a region well known as the sunniest part of the country. Chef Vitus’ combines a down-to-earth approach with crea-tivity and flare. He enjoys sharing his unique recipes with you during his cookery workshops, as well as in his cookbook Der Essenmacher (The Food-Maker).

The individually styled guest rooms are comfortable and lovingly furnished. Relax in the spa with stunning views over the surrounding mountains. St. Veit is ideal for active summer or skiing holidays, with about 800 km of ski slopes and countless cycling routes and hiking trails in the vicinity.

Restaurant

Vitus Winkler is a renowned chef, not only in the Salzburg region but in all of Austria. The TV chef served celebrities such as Boris Becker and Claudia Schiffer. He finds himself mostly inspired by nature. Vitus is a Jack of all trades; he makes his own cheese, owns a vineyard and grows more than 60 different herb species in the hotel’s kitchen garden. His dishes are a feast for the eyes prepared with fresh mostly locally sourced produce (the dairy products come from the neighbour’s farm). The talented Vitus gives cooking lessons and has written a cookbook. The Chef’s Table seats 14 persons and offers a sensational culinary night out.

In winter time nearby Alpendorf, only 10 minutes away by car, offers access to more than 800 km of ski slopes. Well worth a visit is Salzburg, the city of Mozart and the Sound of Music. Another place of interest is the world’s largest ice cave, Eisriesenwelt, in the village of Werfen.
