The historical Hanseatic town of Schmallenberg in Sauerland is just a short drive from the ski resort of Winterberg. Hotel Störmann was built when the town was reconstructed after a devastating fire in 1822. For many years it served as the royal Prussian coaching inn.
This renowned hotel has welcomed many famous figures, including the former chancellors Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl. The hotel was in the Störmann family for eight generations, and now the Deimann family is writing the next chapter of its rich history. Hotel Störmann has recently been extensively restored and tastefully refurbished in keeping with the character of the building – the striking cast-iron inn sign makes a good example.
Nestled in a region aptly known as ‘the land of a thousand hills’, it makes an excellent base to explore the beautiful forested countryside, with its wide network of footpaths and cycle paths.
*Minimum stay of 2 nights required when check-in is on a weekend day
The restaurant is a beacon of warm hospitality. The tables close to the pleasant open fireplace are obvious favourites with guests. Chef Bastian Salzmann is happy to source excellent regional produce, such as locally farmed meat, cheese and seasonal vegetables. The restaurant’s menu offers classic German cuisine; from delicious home-made Flamenkuchen to innovative and exciting versions of familiar dishes.
Restaurant Störmann is opened daily from 11.00 - 22.00.
The deckchairs Hotel Störmann’s garden invite you to relax after a visit to the sauna. The south west facing garden is the ideal spot to unwind and enjoy the sunshine with a book. Weather permitting lunch and dinner are served on the terraces in front or at the rear of the hotel.
Many walking trails connect the centuries old villages in this captivating landscape of the 1,000 mountains. A favourite is the Gold Villages Trail, leading you along nine picturesque villages in the region. Well-known is the Rothaarsteig, a 154 km long trail through the Rothaar Mountains offering stunning views and above all: challenges, tranquillity, nature and culture. The trail is also called Trail of the Senses. Well worth a visit is the celebrated stocking manufacturer Falke. And why not pay a visit to one of the many (well-known) breweries. Winter sports centre Winterberg, aka The Roof of Sauerland, is not far from Schmallenberg.
