The medieval castle of Slot Doddendael is just outside the city of Nijmegen in the Land of Maas and Waal, on a narrow strip of land between the rivers Maas and Waal. This high-quality, small-scale hotel is a beacon of fine hospitality, a veritable family owned hotel, superbly run by Jan Willem and Fabienne ’t Hooft-Braam.
Lunch and dinner are served in the informal Brasserie Baronne in the vaulted basement of the castle. The cuisine thrives on the finest local produce, and with the innovative ‘meat market’ concept, you can choose your own preferred cut of local Black Angus beef and then decide how you would like it cooked.
The Salet, the private dining room on the ground floor, seats groups of up to 20. The ground floor also makes a great venue for special occasions, as does the monumental annexe. For those who would like to stay the night, the castle has two charming guest rooms. The coach house, ‘t Spijker, is available as a enchanting honeymoon suite. The large garden is the ideal venue for a romantic dinner for two, but also for a grand lunch or function.
Brasserie Baronne, in the vaulted basement, is a paradise for meat lovers. Not only do you get to pick your own preferred choice cut of beef, you also have a say in the cooking process. De Baronne even serves the traditional Sunday roast on Sundays. The wines are quirkily labelled Good, Better and Best. During game season, the restaurant serves a 3 course game menu. Home-made treats, such as jams, jellies and fruit juices are for sale in the Dodden-Deli. The many historic rooms offer plenty of scope for private dining as well as large functions.
The castle is nestled in a gorgeous garden and real moat. The first things to catch your eye driving over the drawbridge towards the castle are the cheerful cattails. Various well placed seats invite you to enjoy the garden. Weather permitting meals are served on one of the terraces. The parkland is the ideal place to unwind and relax in a weekend break or as an attractive venue for a special function.
