Along the river IJssel | Landgoed Rhederoord
The pretty valley of the river IJssel near Arnhem is lined with castles and country houses. Rhederoord is a stately mansion at the top of an incline sloping gently down towards the river. Built in 1746 as the country retreat for Arnhem dignitaries, the house offers wonderful views over the winding river and the estates beyond, and is surrounded by 12 hectares of parkland.
There are guestrooms in the house itself or in the former coach house, where you can also dine in the tastefully contemporary restaurant. The restaurant is famed for exceptional country cuisine: every ingredient either comes from the Rhederoord estate itself or is produced locally, and is always organic. At the weekend, the restaurant is also open at lunchtime. The elegant function rooms and garden are often the setting for weddings and other receptions. The nearby Veluwezoom National Park, with its landscape of woods and heathland, is well worth a visit.
